PINOT GRIGIO VALDADIGE DOC
There are two classes of Italian Pinot Grigio.
The top class is DOC (Denominazione d' Origine Controllata).
DOC is an official government guarantee of the origin.
In all of Italy there are only six DOC areas for Pinot
Grigio: Collio, Friuli, Venezia, Trentino, Alto Adige and
Valdadige. These areas are all in the northeast and were selected because they produce the best Pinot Grigio wines. The most prestigious is Valdadige, renowned for its finesse, delicate flavor and bouquet.
Non DOC Pinot Grigio wines are labelled I.G.T.
(Indicazione Geografica Tipica). These Pinot Grigio wines have a typical indication of their geographical area of production. Some of these wines also come from northeastern Italy, the traditional and original areas, but from unspecified zones. They have the general character of the region, but not the top quality that can only come from DOC vineyards.
Other Italian I.G.T. areas like Tuscany and Sicily also grow
Pinot Grigio grapes. However, because of warmer climate and soil
differences don't have the taste of character that Pinot Grigio
consumers expect.
